Ink Jet-Laser-Cell Phone Recycling Program (New, year-round)
You can now recycle your ink cartridges, toner, and cell phones, free of charge, either as a business customer or as residential customer.
Please don't landfill these items. The can be sent in for re-manufacturing or recycling. Did you know: about 85% of all empty ink cartridges are thrown "away." Over a million end up in landfills daily and don't decompose—even after 1,000 years. The other 15% end up in Guiyu, China and become electronic waste or e-waste. There is no need to throw away these items.
How to participate: either as a business customer or as residential customer.
Free Compact Fluorescent & Fluorescent Bulb Drop-Off (year-round)
The Compact Fluorescent Tube & Fluorescent Bulb program is alive and well. The total we recycled for 2007 was 1.6 tons, or 3,200 pounds!!
Thanks to the proceeds from the NEW Ink Cartridge Recycling Program, residential customers can still bring up to 10 fluorescent light tubes or compact fluorescent bulbs to the recycling center per visit. The Ashland Recycling Center is on Water Street in Ashland. Take the opportunity to recycle those tubes and bulbs at no cost! No commercial customers, please!
Don't toss toxics! Fluorescent lights contain mercury and don't belong in the trash. Please recycle them and keep mercury out of the environment. [read July article from City Source]
Keep in mind: Using one compact fluorescent bulb eliminates the need to burn 110 pounds of coal to generate electricity. It also prevents 450 pounds of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from reaching the atmosphere and contributing to climate change. -from 18seconds.org

(Nov. 5 through Nov. 17, 2008)
For over two weeks every spring and every fall, we accept your plastic potting containers, five-gallon buckets with lids, and trays—for free at the Ashland Recycling Center on Water Street (corner of Water and Van Ness).
2007 Update: From May 13-June 1, 2007, you brought in 2,740 pounds of nursery plastics and trays for recycling! In the fall you added another 1,540 pounds. Adding this year's spring and fall events together, 4,280 pounds of nursery plastics were diverted from the landfill in 2007! The nursery plastics were transported to Agriplastics in Salem. They were cleaned, separated by resin, grinded up and sold for non-food applications only, like bed liners and new nursery plastics. Thanks for helping us keep reusable materials out of the landfill!!!
